On December 23rd, 2013, the former president of Uruguay, José Mujica, signed a new bill into law, which legalized cannabis across the board, including for recreational sales. This bold move made history and crowned Uruguay as the first country in the world to legalize cannabis. 

Now, citizens and residents over the age of 18 can legally buy cannabis for recreational purposes, possess up to 40 grams of cannabis per month, and cultivate up to 6 plants in their homes for their personal use.
