On January 1st, 2013, Croatia became one of the first countries in the Balkans to decriminalize small amounts of cannabis for personal use.

This means that small amounts of cannabis (typically under 5 grams) are no longer a criminal offense punishable with arrest or imprisonment, but now a misdemeanor punishable with a fine between €663.65 and €2680.

Croatia took another major step in October 2015 and became the first country in the Balkans to allow patients to buy and use cannabis for serious illnesses. Now, patients who qualify can legally purchase and possess up to 7.5 grams of medical marijuana per month.
