Since early 2015, Malta has taken a very soft approach towards cannabis, decriminalizing the possession of small amounts for personal use. But in December 2021, Malta made history when it became the first EU nation to legalize the possession and cultivation of cannabis for recreational use

Now in Malta, it is legal for citizens and residents to carry up to 7 grams of cannabis in public, keep up to 50 grams of cannabis in their homes, and cultivate up to four weed plants in their homes for personal use. 

Since 2018, Malta has also had a medical marijuana program in place, allowing patients with specific health conditions to have access to the plant as an alternative to traditional treatments.

Yes, cannabis is legal in Malta. Citizens and residents over the age of 18 can carry up to 7 grams of cannabis in public, keep up to 50 grams of cannabis in their homes, and cultivate up to four weed plants in their homes for personal use. The plants must be in the house and not visible to the public, including balconies.

Yes, it's legal to consume cannabis within a private residence in Malta.  

Is It Legal To Use Weed In Public In Malta?  

No, it's illegal to use cannabis in public; the public consumption of cannabis may result in a fine of up to €235. 

Using cannabis in front of children is also illegal in Malta and can result in a fine of up to €500. 

Can I Buy Weed In Malta? 

No, buying and selling cannabis in Malta is illegal.

If you don't have the time or know how to cultivate your own cannabis plants, you can join a cannabis club and get your weed from there. 

What's A Cannabis Club? 

In Malta, a cannabis club is a non-profit organization for members only that legally grows its own weed and distributes it to the members of the club for their personal use. These clubs are limited to 500 members only, and the clubs are not allowed to sell any cannabis to their members; instead, they distribute the cannabis to their members in exchange for a fee that covers the cost of cultivating the plant.

Yes, medical cannabis is legal in Malta and available to patients with specific health conditions. 

Is CBD Legal in Malta?   

Yes, hemp-derived CBD containing less than 0.3% THC is legal in Malta.
