Jamaica has been known for its cannabis culture for decades, making many people think ganja was legal on the tropical island. However, it was completely illegal until April 2015, after which an amendment was made to Jamaica's Dangerous Drugs Act. 

Now, after years of debate, ganja is legal in Jamaica for medical purposes and legal for people of the Rastafarian faith.

For people outside of the Rastafarian faith and medical treatment, possession of 2 ounces (56 grams) of ganja or less is not an offense where someone can be arrested, charged, and tried in court. Instead, they may have to pay a fine of J$500.

Is Weed Legal in Jamaica?      

Cannabis is legal for medical purposes and for people of the Rastafarian faith who have a license so that they can use the plant for religious purposes. 

It's also legal for Jamaican citizens and residents to grow up to five cannabis plants in the home. 

Can You Possess Weed in Public in Jamaica? 

If you have a valid medical card or are a part of the Rastafarian faith, you can legally possess cannabis in public. 

For people outside of the Rastafarian faith and medical treatment, the public possession of up to 2 ounces (56 grams) of cannabis for personal use is decriminalized and may result in a fine of J$500. 

What Does Decriminalized Mean?   

Cannabis decriminalization means the plant remains technically illegal, but possession is no longer treated as a criminal offense. Instead of arrest or imprisonment, people found with amounts below the decriminalized threshold will receive a warning, fine, referral to a drug treatment program, or another non-criminal penalty.   

By removing criminal penalties, decriminalization helps reduce the social and economic impact of enforcing cannabis laws, such as policing, court proceedings, and jail time.

Yes, each household can cultivate up to five cannabis plants in Jamaica.

Yes, CBD is legal in Jamaica as long as it has no more than 1% THC.
